The Art of Living: Back to the community in every way

At Avenues to Independence, people with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, and other developmental disabilities live and work in the community. This has been possible since 1953 because the people of Avenues to Independence continue to put aside old ideas about what is possible.

In 1960, the average life expectancy of a person with Down syndrome was 10 years old. Today, the average lifespan of a person with Down syndrome is 60 years old. The advancements made in medical science and opportunities provided by organizations like Avenues to Independence make it possible for people with Down syndrome to lead lives with independence and dignity.

The graph below illustrates the upward life expectancy for people with Down syndrome and inspired the artwork created to celebrate our clients and this year's Love Affair: "The Art of Living: Back to the community in every way". Artist Alisa Singer * wanted to illustrate the incredible impact that being a part of the community has on the increased life expectancy for individuals with Down syndrome.

Please consider supporting the individuals we serve through a virtual paddle raise! This will help them get back to the community in every way.

We are excited to announce that we have a $100,000 matching challenge grant this year from the Louis and Harold Price Foundation! Every dollar raised for Love Affair could be matched! While we cannot raise our paddles in person we hope you will consider "raising" your a paddle to support our program participants, to honor Bob Okazaki, and in memory of Ann Marie Ehrlich.
